Summer is a tough time for families struggling with food insecurity. Many children and families rely on meals at school, so when school lets out for summer, many children lose access to free breakfasts and lunches. Advocate Capital's associates recently volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee by sorting, quality checking, and packing donated food from grocery stores. Second Harvest provides food to people facing hunger in Middle Tennessee and works to advance hunger solutions.
According to Second Harvest, "1 in 8 Middle and West Tennesseans face food insecurity, while at the same time, landfills are piling up with wasted food. Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee is working toward a future in which everyone has equitable access to the food and resources they need, while minimizing food waste in the process."
Second Harvest receives food donations and surplus food from grocery stores, farms, manufacturers, distributors, and individuals. In addition to food donations, they raise funds to buy food at bulk prices. Food is sorted and distributed to after-school programs, soup kitchens, senior centers, and other nonprofits providing food to hungry people.
As a group, we sorted 3,921 pounds of food, which is equal to 3,267 meals. We would like to thank all our associates who took the time to volunteer: Kaila Owens, Tammi Brewster, David Alford, Lisa Larkin, Claire Wood, Michael Moore, Ashley Harrison, Nikole Kahani, and Amanda Unterreiner.
Advocate Capital also made a donation to Second Harvest that will provide 2,000 meals to those in need. We are grateful to be able to support such an amazing organization that is making a difference in our community.
We would like to give a huge thank you to Second Harvest for the work they do to help those in need in our community, especially during the summer.
