Advocate Capital’s associates recently volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee by sorting and packaging food. Second Harvest provides food to people facing hunger in Middle Tennessee and works to advance hunger solutions.
“Massive quantities of food get dumped into landfills, yet 1 in 8 Middle Tennesseans experience hunger. This is partially a logistics problem. Thanks to donors and volunteers, Second Harvest has the space and manpower to manage large shipments, break them into smaller units, and send them at the right time and in the right quantity to our network of Partner Agencies across 46 counties.”
Second Harvest receives food donations and surplus food from grocery stores, farms, manufacturers, distributors, and individuals. In addition to food donations, they raise funds to buy food at bulk prices. Food is sorted and distributed to afterschool programs, soup kitchens, senior centers, and other nonprofits that provide food to people facing hunger.
As a group, we sorted 122 boxes of produce (1,350 pounds of squash, oranges, and apples) and packaged them into bags for families! We would like to thank all our associates who took the time to volunteer: Bryan Shorthouse, Michael Moore, Tiffany Collier, David Alford, Shirley Johnson, Michelle Rigsby, Lisa Larkin, Lynne Cushing, Tina Burns, Mary Berst, Liz Kapamas, and Amanda Unterreiner.
Advocate Capital also made a donation to Second Harvest that will provide 2,000 meals to those in need. We are grateful to be able to support such an amazing organization.
We would also like to give a huge thank you to Second Harvest for the work they do to help those in need in our community, especially during the holiday season.
