Congratulations to our great friend and client, Carleton R. “Tex” Hoy of Hoy Trial Lawyers and Professor L.L.C. for being featured in the inaugural Past President Proverbs series, included in the March/April 2021 edition of the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Magazine, Barrister.
Tex began his distinguished 60 plus year law career as the first law clerk for the United States District Court in South Dakota before graduating from the University of South Dakota Law School in 1956. Tex worked as an associate attorney from 1957 to 1987 until he and his son James Hoy started Hoy and Hoy. In 2004, Tex and James joined Scott Hoy (Tex’s middle son) at Hoy Trial Lawyers, Prof. L.L.C., where they remain to this date.
Tex described the most important skills a trial lawyer needs to have:
“Self-confidence, eye contact with the jury, courtesy to opposing counsel and all court personnel, confidence in your client’s version of the case, and timely preparation.”
Tex was also recognized by the Cook County News-Herald as a “leader in the South Dakota legal community since law school.” He was a member of the first South Dakota Law Review Board and past president of the Law Student Bar Association. Tex received the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Thank you to Tex Hoy for his lifetime of distinguished service and continued pursuit of justice.
