Juneteenth National Independence Day is a federal holiday, signed into law on June 17, 2021. It is the first new federal holiday since MLK Day was signed into law in 1983.
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom to mark the historic date of June 19, 1865. That is when the people of Galveston, TX, were informed that all enslaved people were freed under the Emancipation Proclamation, which was signed more than two years earlier.
While Juneteenth is new as an officially recognized holiday, it is not new. Millions of people and organizations across the country have celebrated Juneteenth for more than a century.
