Mr. Ron Netemeyer and Ms. Jill Harper have settled a Wrongful-death claim for 5 Million dollars. Mr. Netemeyer and Ms. Harper represented the mother of a Missouri county jail inmate who was beaten to death by another inmate.
The decedent was unable to make bond after being charged with domestic assault, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. The decedent was physically and mentally disabled and should have been in solitary confinement, under constant supervision for his safety. Instead, the jail staff housed the decedent with another inmate who was incarcerated for a third-degree assault on a special victim. The inmate responsible for the attack reportedly planned and targeted the victim while he was awaiting his mental health evaluation.
The inmate beat and kicked the decedent in the head for seventeen-and-a-half minutes before the jail staff intervened. Jill Harper described the attack as “gruesome and horrific.”
The county denied negligence or fault and settled the case with the decedent’s mother in probate court. The inmate has been charged with first-degree murder, and his case is currently suspended pending a competency evaluation.
