Nominations are open for Public Justice’s Trial Lawyer of the Year Award and will close on February 28th, 2025. The award is given each year to an attorney or group of attorneys who have “made the greatest contribution to the public interest within the past year by trying or settling a precedent-setting, socially significant case.” Eligible cases must have been settled or given a verdict/judgment between January 1st, 2024, and January 1st, 2025.
In 2024, the award was won by attorneys at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC and others for their work on John Doe 1 vs. Exxon Mobil Corp. This landmark case sought justice for 11 villagers in Aech, Indonesia, who claimed Exxon’s contracted security force (from the Indonesian Army) tortured, killed, and kidnapped the plaintiffs or their family members while protecting Exxon’s oil and natural gas facilities in the area. The plaintiffs initially filed the suit in 2001 but did not reach a settlement with Exxon until just before trial in May of 2023.
