According to Public Justice, current and former women employees at Disney have filed a lawsuit shedding light on pay inequalities within the company.
The lawsuit alleges that for years, women working at Disney were passed over for promotions and raises. Evidence shows that the corporation was aware of the disparity and decided to keep it quiet instead of rectifying the situation.
Disney requested to seal the court records from the public without real reason other than the negative impact it would have on their reputation. In October 2023, Public Justice joined the journalism organization KnockLA to advocate for the public's right to access court records by filing a motion to join the case as an amicus. The court dismissed Public Justice's motion to join the case as amicus, but their intervention did compel Disney's attorneys to withdraw their request for document sealing.
Public Justice stated, "Open access to court proceedings and judicial records is a fundamental element of the American legal system. Just as fundamental is the role of the press."
Lori Andrus, the lead attorney for the case, stated, "What really made the difference was the pressure applied by Public Justice’s appearance in the case.”
Media outlets have since covered the allegations made against Disney in the lawsuit. The trial is slated for May 2025. Click here to read more about the case from Public Justice.
