According to Public Justice, the Racoon River in Iowa provides drinking water for 500,000 citizens.
Runoff from farms in the area impacts the river and leads to high nitrate levels that are undrinkable to citizens. Due to the runoff, Iowan citizens are paying more for their water bill because the Des Moines Water Works must use expensive nitrate treatment to make the water safe.
The Public Justice Food Project, Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, and Food & Water Watch recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of all Iowans. The lawsuit is to hold the corporate-controlled agriculture system accountable for polluting the water.
The recently filed lawsuit would secure the citizens' right to clean drinking water and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The lawsuit would also mandate proven management practices that would ensure the water was not being contaminated.
