Public Justice and other organizations have been working to stop the second attempt at ag-gag laws in Iowa. Ag-gag laws prevent undercover investigations of animal cruelty, unsafe working conditions, and food safety threats in facilities.
According to Animal Legal Defense Fund, this second ag-gag law, known as "Ag-gag 2.0." focuses on a different form of speech integral to investigations. The ag-gag 2.0 prevents "agricultural production facility trespass," meaning people who perform undercover investigations of facilities cannot document via emails, video, or audio recordings to prove their findings later in court.
Undercover investigations allow workers to speak out about unsafe working conditions, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, that otherwise would go unreported and lead to more outbreaks in local communities. If the law were legal, it would be illegal for investigators to share how employees are being treated in meatpacking facilities or farms in Iowa.
