A family from Switzerland is thankful they found their way to Robert B. Sykes & Associates, P.C., in Salt Lake City, Utah. The family of four was traveling in a rented Dodge Caravan on a western states sightseeing tour when they were involved in a life-altering accident. The father who was driving the van began making a left turn with a green light behind another vehicle also making the same turn. As he was completing his turn, he was t-boned on the driver’s side by an ambulance. The defendant ambulance driver sped through the intersection against a red light at a high rate of speed without making certain that the intersection was clear of traffic in violation of the Utah Code.
The entire family was injured in this violent collision but the father and daughter who were seated on the driver’s side (direct point of impact) sustained the worst injuries. Although unknown to all immediately after the accident, the father sustained a serious brain injury which later required two surgeries to correct.
The family’s eight year old daughter sustained a massive brain injury as well as numerous orthopedic injuries. She has yet to regain full consciousness and has no cognition. She will never be able to manage her activities of daily living. Approximately a month after the accident, she was moved by air ambulance to Switzerland to a rehabilitation facility where she remains today. Eventually if her health permits, she will be transferred to her home which will require extensive renovation. Her medical bills alone to date exceed $1M and the life care plan estimates the future cost for her care will exceed $31MM.
