My good friend Simona Farrise is well known and highly respected for her proven track record and willingness to fight for justice. A very successful trial lawyer, Simona has spent her career fighting for justice and she aims to take the fight for justice to the California State Assembly. Simona recently explained to me why she is running for office:
California’s Courts are closing down because the court’s budget has been reduced so much in the last three years that, according to the Chief Justice, there is a looming civil rights crisis. (Click here to learn more.)
In this climate, it is difficult for consumer lawyers to get fair value for their clients who have been injured and killed when the timeline from filing a case to trial has been extended and lengthened due to a court backlog resulting from budget cuts. In Los Angeles County alone, five courthouses and sixty courtrooms have closed in the last two years. California no longer has court reporters. Statewide, 250 courtrooms have closed in the last two years without much fanfare and mostly under the radar of most people. So I decided to try to do something about it – go to Sacramento as an Assembly Member and be a strong voice for regular people who are struggling and, of course, for Justice and Equality.
Also, in California personal injury recoveries for pain and suffering damages are limited to $250,000 under an outdated and unfair 1970s law known as MICRA. Damage caps mean that regular folks without a big paycheck are not treated the same as big money makers. Ordinary Californians cannot bring medical malpractice claims against bad doctors who practice bad medicine and kill people. As you know, damage caps don’t exist in most other states or have been found to be unconstitutional. California lags behind the nation in this respect and it is simply unfair. I believe that access to Justice should be equal for all Californians and not just those with big paychecks if they are hurt or killed because of substandard and careless medical care. On this front, there are clear distinctions between me and the other new democrats running for the Assembly seat. (Click here to view the other candidates’ positions on MICRA.)
