Many law firms are creating content through podcasts as part of their marketing strategy, which creates some competition. While podcasts can be a great way to reach an audience, it’s important to consider the qualities of being interesting and articulate in order to stand out.
Below are some tips provided by Attorney at Work to consider!
You Need to Be Engaging
According to the director of a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) organization, an in-person speaker can be forgiven for being boring if the audience truly needs the information being delivered. However, podcasts are a different story.
By nature, most podcast listeners are only using a portion of their attention while listening. They might be commuting, exercising, doing household chores, or pursuing their hobbies. They seek additional input, but their minds are likely to wander, and that's often expected.
Be Honest with Yourself
Record a sample podcast segment where you explain something. Don't read from a script. Ask someone to throw an unprepared question at you and think about how you respond; what would your audience want to hear or know more about?
Starting a podcast requires a great deal of effort. You won't be able to attract and retain listeners if your delivery undermines the value of your message. So be sure to listen to yourself and be your own critic toward your delivery.
Also, be sure to ask those around you, at home and in your firm, to evaluate whether your speech patterns are suitable for broadcasting. If you can get an honest response, it can either encourage or humble you.
Guests Are Likely Needed
It's not just your own ability to engage listeners that matters. Many podcasters feature a guest on each episode, typically someone with special expertise in a particular aspect of the podcast's topic. This keeps your podcasts diverse and interesting.
